   Ain't every day you get to tell a ghost story.
   And so....
   It’s been 12 years since I quit the newspaper game.
   And while I still miss what newspapers used to be during my glory days as a reporter, I hardly miss the horrific mess the news game has become.
   For me, the problem has been the sordid shift in daily journalism’s understanding of what belongs in a newspaper – and what doesn’t.
   Years ago, for example, I worked for a brilliant Ohio editor publisher named Ben Maidenberg who asked one basic question of any event to determine if it belonged in the newspaper he ran:
   “Is this something our readers need to know?”
   Maidenberg, who came from Russian immigrant stock, lived and breathed the newspaper game as a “calling” that defined his life.
   Further, Ben viewed “his” Akron Beacon Journal as a community institution more than equal to the local school system , hospitals, places of worship and financial institutions servants of the people.
   More than a quarter-century has passed since Ben was laid to rest with his people in the Jewish cemetery at Marion, Indiana where his grandfather first peddled thread and needles door to door to Hoosier farmers in the late 19^th century.
    Now 74 and two years younger than the Ohio publisher was at his death, Ben’s spirit returned to visit me -- having been resurrected by a startling story in the local South Florida Sun-Sentinel:
     Fort Lauderdale man accused
        of having sex with canine.
  A Fort Lauderdale man was arrested Sunday and accused of knowingly having sexual contact with a pet dog named Mimi.
“Jesus Goddam Christ,” roared Ben’s ghost from the grave. “What kind of idiot asshole would put shit like in their newspaper?”
“She’s a reporter named Linda Trischitta,” I told Ben.
   “Well somebody needs to put their foot up her ass and then fire her boss,” Ben snorted.
   Having cheated death countless times as a combat Marine in the Pacific, Ben’s language often raped polite discourse.
Anyhow..
I read on from the Sun-Sentinel’s version of community news in the 21^st century.
Jenson Bolla-Sosa, 28, of Fort Lauderdale, was also charged with cruelty to an animal and resisting arrest without violence.
According to a probable cause affidavit that Broward County first appearance Judge John “Jay” Hurly read aloud Monday, witnesses observed Bolla-Sosa having sex with the dog, and told officers that it was whimpering in pain.
“If that’s this Trischitta broad’s idea of a clean sentence, then I’m a blue-assed baboon,” Ben announced. “Where the hell was the Sun-Sentinel’s goddam copy desk?”
   “I think all that’s mostly done with computers,” I said, before reading on.
When it seemed that Hurley would deny bond, Assistant Public Defender Terry Conover said Bolla-Sosa had no prior record.
   “We have serious cases here, judge, that involve the abuse of women or the amuse of men, of human beings, and they are able to post bond,” Conover said. “The facts of this case are not good. But comparing it the abuse of a human being is not as significant.”
   Hurley disagreed.
   “I think abuse of an animal in certain circumstances can be just as significant and troubling,” Hurley said.
    “Tell hell with animal abuse,” Ben grumbled. “That kind of bullshit reporting is an abuse of the First Amendment.”
    With which I could not argue.
    Especially since I was being yelled at by a truly pissed off ghost.

   My on-going thesis is simple enough:
The increasingly unfathomable complexity of our daily lives has resulted in a paradigm shift from Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock to Future Psychosis.
   Future Shock, as Toffler wrote in 1970, a Western Cultural response “too much change in too short a period of time” – which spawns a rising tide of shattering "stress and disorientation” in both the individual and society.
     However...
    Today’s hairless ape is drowning in a tsunami of information, with the Known Unknowns of the 21^st Century having reached quantum proportion -- resulting, as Yeats predicted, in a center that can no longer hold.
    All of which explains the current (and growing) tsunami of bewildering social anomalies like:
    Government as the enemy.
  Fear of the educated elite.
    When excess equals success.
    And parents want to be siblings
    The adoration of mediocrity.
    Growing cults enraptured by childish superstition.
    How the poor have it coming.
    Jingoistic nationalism as a response to a global economy.
    All of which serve as an introduction to the first in a series of Metaphors* From Dystopia.
