 Throwback         Genius
Today
– Doomed by Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s  farewell speech at Yankee stadium endures as a golden zenith in American sports – while boxer Mike Tyson biting off a chunk of his opponent’s ear 14 years ago today remains one of the sports world's rotten worst.  But then what can you expect from a "sport" dominated by South Florida’s Don King, an ex-Ohio gambler who killed two men and now lives in a $19.9 million oceanfront estate amid the mega-rich in  Palm Beach County?  Once declared “The Baddest Man on the Planet,” Tyson did time for rape, failed in a comeback attempt that included his chewing on Evander Holyfield’s ear and filed for bankruptcy in 2003 after receiving some $300 million during his years in the ring. In less politically correct circles, Tyson serves as a bad taste poster child for  shitty end of the Bell Curve.

Birthday Boy An edgy genius of broad farce, biting satire and crotch-kicking parody, Mel Brooks nee Melvin Kaminsky was born in Brooklyn 85 years ago today – the under-sized and sickly son of Jewish immigrants. Often bullied, the under-sized Brooks-Kaminsky  developed a quick mind and a sharp sense of humor as a defense --  which led him to Summer jobs as an fast-taking MC (Tummler) in the Borsch Belt , then to gigs as a stand up comedian and a job as a writer on Sid Caeser’s pioneering Show of Shows. A living legend in virtually every facet of the entertainment industry, Brooks is one of the few to win an Oscar, Emmy, a Tony, and a Grammy in recognition of his talent – with comedy hits like The Producers, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles.
