               Pig War       Xaviera
Today – Known as the “Pig War,” bloodless military hostilities between the United States and Canada broke out 152 years ago today over the shooting death of a Canadian pig by an American farmer in a far northwestern border dispute. Troops from both the US and Canada were sent to the area after Lyman Cutler shot and killed a black pig  that had crossed the border  from Canada into the American farmer’s potato patch. Led by future Confederate General George Pickett (of Pickett’s Charge fame), US troops were dispatched when Canadian authorities threatened to  arrest the American farmer for shooting Canadian farmer Charles Griffin's border-crossing pig. Canada responded by dispatching a unit of British* soldiers – all of which much combative taunting, fist-shaking and general rowdiness between the two military units until Washington and London* quelled the disturbance. *At the time, Canada was a British colony. Birthday Girl - Vera de Vries, aka Xaviera  Hollander of Happy Hooker fame,  was born 68 years ago today in what is now Indonesia, spending the first two years of her infancy in a Japanese internment camp with her Dutch citizen parents. Early on a citizen of the world, de Vries was raised in Amsterdam and then met, married and divorced an American businessman in South Africa before traveling to New York where she first worked as a secretary in the Dutch Embassy and then became $1,000-a-night call girl. In 1969, as Xaviera, she opened the Vertical Whorehouse,  an upscale Manhattan brothel – rocketing to tabloid (and ultimately national) fame following her arrest by NYPD Vice Cops and the publication of her best-selling The Happy Hooker : My Own Story. Today, after 30 years as a featured sex columnist for Penthouse magazine,  Hollander caters to bed-and-breakfast guests visiting her Xaviera’s Happy House  in Amsterdam.
