Whatever                        Mel Blanc

Today – Today be Memorial Day. But what we supposed  to remember? Like Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori? Or 20% Off – Today Only? Or whatever?

Birthday Boy Mel Blanc, the Man with a Thousand Voices – including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck – was born 103 years ago today in 1908. At the time of his death in 1989, it was estimated that 20 million heard his voice every day. Blanc’s skills at producing a cornucopia of voices for different characters landed him a job in the early days of radio, where he could slash production costs by playing numerous parts – thus eliminating the need for (and salaries of) additional actors. He first hit national fame as a regular on the Jack Benny Show where his fellow cast members said he was the first and only comedian able to make Benny laugh during a skit. The inscription on his tombstone reads: “That’s All Folks.”
